Ignoring Routine Air Filter Replacement Can Have Serious Consequences

air filter replacementWhen was the last time you changed your air filter? If you’re like most homeowners, it’s been months, or maybe even years. While most people replace the filter when their home comfort system stops working efficiently, neglecting regular air filter replacement can cause plenty of problems — from higher energy bills to more allergens and lower air quality.

Failing to set up a routine air filter replacement schedule can have some surprising consequences for your home, including the following:

  • Higher energy bills – A dirty air filter makes your system work harder, resulting in higher costs for your home energy. Simply changing the filter can lower heating and cooling costs and keep you more comfortable.
  • Shorter system life – Without regular filter changes, dust and dirt will get into your system, leading to greater wear and tear, and ultimately an earlier replacement of the air conditioner or heating unit. Both of these appliances are high ticket items. Spending a little money and time replacing your filters will protect your investment and keep you from getting hit with a huge repair bill.
  • Increased allergens – When a dirty filter is in your A/C, pet dander, pollen and other items can work their way into your ducts, leading to increased allergies and potential respiratory issues. Your HVAC system has a filter for a reason. Proper air filter replacement is designed to improve your air quality.

Replacing your air filter does more than protect your health, your home and your investment. You can reduce your carbon footprint and live a more eco-friendly lifestyle, too. If you’ve been looking for ways to live a greener lifestyle, using less energy is a great way to start.

  1. I’ve known people who never thought to change their filters. One look at how dirty a filter gets was enough to change their mind. All of that dirt gets pulled right back into the ducts and into the air, plus, as you said, it means HVAC system stress and potentially higher bills. Just that one little bit of maintenance can prevent a horde of future problems and expense!
