Your AC Will Work Hard This Summer, Keep it Running Smoothly
With summer almost here, it’s time to get your air conditioner in working order. It’s important to do this now, because some common issues can keep your air conditioner from working properly when you need it.
Some of common problems that you should be on the lookout for include:
- Leaks: This can cause water problems throughout your house as the water drips through your walls and messes up the paint and structure. You can avoid problems here by emptying the drain pan.
- Electrical problems: Whenever a refrigerant unit isn’t tested or is leaking, it can cause electrical problems. These problems will lead to hot air being blown into the room, if you can get the unit to turn on at all. Usually you will need to have it rewired or the fan motor fixed.
- Freeze-up: Your air conditioner can freeze up if it is operating at a temperature that’s lower than recommended. Often fixing this problem is simply a matter of turning off the unit and running the fan until all of the ice has melted. Make sure that the refrigerant level is kept high, because when they are too low they will freeze.
- Clogged filter: The filter in your unit’s panel may also clog up. Correcting this problem is simply a matter of changing the filter. Failure to do so can cause your unit to lock up.
While you can keep an eye on these areas to avoid problems, it is especially important to keep up with the maintenance on your air conditioner. A yearly tune-up performed by a professional HVAC technician can keep a lid on problems and catch any concerns before they get out of hand. Getting this maintenance before the height of air conditioning season is the key to comfort.
In particular, if you suspect your A/C might have problems with electrical components, the refrigerant, or compressor, contact a professional. These complicated systems should be left to the experts.
