Your New Air Conditioner: Installation Issues That Profoundly Affect Performance

air conditioner installation, Long Island, New YorkReading efficiency labels is important when purchasing a new cooling system, but it’s only half the battle. Although you may not give it much thought, the air conditioner installation process plays a huge role in securing efficiency ratings and performance values.

To get the most value from your equipment, be sure that your contractor considers these four factors at the time of installation.

Four installation factors that affect an A/C’s SEER

Air conditioners are tested for efficiency under controlled lab conditions. When systems are installed in the field, however, there are variables that can impact their seasonal energy efficiency ratio (SEER). Some factors, like climate, cannot be altered, but there are four key items that a knowledgable contractor can manipulate in order to ensure that your system runs as efficiently as possible:

  • Airflow – Proper airflow is necessary for the desired temperature change to occur across the evaporator coil. When airflow is inadequate, the system can’t live up to its expected performance values, and home comfort may be diminished. In order to avoid these issues, your technician should measure airflow at the time of installation and make any necessary adjustments.
  • Refrigerant charge – Too many air conditioners are installed with overcharged or undercharged refrigerant. A good contractor, though, will follow manufacturer specifications to the letter. Even slight deviations can significantly reduce a system’s SEER rating.
  • Tight ducts – Before installing your equipment, your contractor should evaluate your ductwork for any leaks. Leaky ducts can create numerous issues, including serious losses in system capacity, mold, higher energy bills, uneven temperatures and even a reduction in indoor air quality as unfiltered air is introduced to the home.
  • Size – Insist that your equipment is properly sized with Manual J. This ensures that your system will meet your home’s exact cooling and dehumidification needs while expending the least possible amount of energy
