A whole-house humidifier can make dry, indoor heat feel so much more comfortable. The humidity level in a home also helps keep the thermostat set a degree or two lower which helps on energy costs. Although the humidifier demands relatively little attention, there are a few things that the homeowner should occasionally check to make sure everything is in good working order.

Here are a few tips to keep the yours clean and working as it should:

The evaporator pad is the main component of the unit. The pad (or filter) spreads out the moisture to be exposed and mixed with heated air. Although water is filtered before reaching the pad, mineral scale can build up from the evaporation process. Once the pad has heavy scale built up, air flow through the pad is restricted. Normally, the pad should be replaced only once or twice a year, If you have hard water, it is best to check it more often.
The orifice controlling the flow of water to the distribution pad can also have scale deposits. Since this orifice regulates the humidity level required, check it occasionally. If there is a mineral scale buildup in the opening, use a small needle to clear the opening and then put it back into place.
Make sure that the water distribution tray is level. Even saturation of the evaporation pad is essential in making sure that the unit works properly. Unbalanced water distribution will result in uneven saturation and the home’s humidity level will not be accurate.
Close the seasonal damper prior to the summer cooling season. When opening it at the beginning of winter, ensure that a clean evaporation pad is in place.

General maintenance of a whole-house humidifier is normally simple and performed quickly. Lime scale is usually the main issue.
